State of Science (week 1)- Post 3

State of Science- Opinion

I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about climate science and all the factors that go into scientists' decisions about climate change and global warming. The facts about carbon emissions and the effects of small global temperature increases are staggering. Furthermore, the scientific certainty with which global warming is classified is scary. I believe a large reason so many common people deny climate change is because they do not want to deal with the difficult truth; climate change is real, and in order to fix this life threatening problem life as we know it will need to change drastically. Overall I am learning about the science behind climate change, and this week I looked at the current and historical state of climate science. Upon seeing the certainty of global temperature increase, based on scientific studies of earth's systems and human interactions' with them, my understanding of climate change has increased dramatically. I also find it fascinating just how much climate change is connected to every part of society. When studying climate change and climate science you cannot just look at scientific journals and data, you have to look are environmental policy, environmental policy makers, and societal decisions to get the full picture.

It is widely known that climate change will have negative effects for us all, however I would like to see more specific examples of the different types of effects. I know global warming will cause incredible harm to the ecosystem, including drought, extinct species, and extreme weather ,however I would like to see the scientific scenarios and data that provides explanation and proof for those effects.

  1. Do you think we will follow more of the mitigation or the adaption model?

    1. Based on the past and current political climate I do not believe our society will be able to commit to the drastic measures needed to stop climate change. The state of our daily life will need to completely change in order for us to truly mitigate. Politicians are too focused on the economy, like they always have been, to be able to properly enforce sustainable living. It is for those reasons that I believe the current populations, and future generations, will be forced to adapt and respond to the disastrous effects climate change is going to have on our ecosystem.

    2. I agree 100%. I think it is special interest groups who are focused on their own monetary gain. Why does it seem like the US is the only country that does not seem to get it?
