Future Climate (Week 6) - Post 3
Future Climate - Thoughts
The information taught this week, for me, was the most real, and impactful. In my lifetime humans will seal the fate of generations to come. That fact is kind of stressful. This week it kind of hit me that with climate and carbon emissions their is no backspace or eraser. Once the carbon is emitted, we cannot take it back. Once we've passed the tipping point there is no stopping it. This week also made me resent climate change deniers more than usual. Thinking about these people in positions of power who will make decisions in the next thirty years and have no idea what they are doing to the ecosystem and to the human race genuinely disturbs me. When writing the posts for this week it really solidified my own future ambitions. While the statement "stopping climate change" seems daunting and impossible, the truth is that scientists all know exactly what needs to happen. We just need to make people aware of it. I believe that if a majority of the population were to know and understand the things taught in this course, real change might happen. That is why my just general consensus from this course is that knowledge and awareness of the issue are the key to making a difference.
I guess my only real question with the material this week is what sort of actions are taken by humans to get us to RCP8.5, RCP3PD, and even RCP6. Because even if we are able to reach an endpoint of 6 W/m^2 it would be better than 8.5. I would like to know what sort of actions can be taken that keep us under or just slightly over the carbon emissions budget.
It was very evident that this week's learning got to you. The more you know, the more upset you may get. You have science and passion behind you - you will be the change agent we need.
